This free word counter gives you every metric writers, students, marketers and SEO professionals need — in one place, instantly.
Typical word counts
| Content type | Typical length |
|---|---|
| SEO title tag | 50–60 characters |
| Meta description | 140–160 characters |
| X (Twitter) post | 280 characters |
| Instagram caption | Up to 2,200 characters |
| College admission essay | 250–650 words |
| Standard blog post | 1,000–2,000 words |
| Pillar page / ultimate guide | 2,500–5,000 words |
How reading time is calculated
The average adult reads non-fiction at about 238 words per minute and speaks at around 150 words per minute. Reading time is your word count divided by 238; speaking time — useful for speeches, presentations and YouTube scripts — is divided by 150.
What is keyword density?
Keyword density is how often a word or phrase appears compared with the total number of words, shown as a percentage. There is no magic number, but if a single phrase is above 3–4% your writing may read as repetitive or “stuffed”. Use the density table to make sure your main topic is present naturally, and use synonyms and related terms to cover the subject in depth.
How words are counted
A word is any run of letters or numbers, including hyphenated words (“well-known”) and contractions (“don’t”), which are counted as one word. Punctuation and emojis are not counted as words but are included in the character count.
Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter count words?
It counts every sequence of letters or numbers as a word. Hyphenated words and contractions count as one word; standalone punctuation does not count.
Does it count characters with and without spaces?
Yes. Both are shown — useful because some platforms and assignments limit characters including spaces and others excluding them.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
Your text never leaves your device. A draft is saved in your browser’s local storage so you don’t lose it; click Clear to remove it.
Can I count words in Hindi or other languages?
Yes. The counter is Unicode-aware and works with Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Arabic, Chinese characters and most other scripts.
What is a good keyword density for SEO?
Most SEO experts recommend writing naturally and keeping any single keyword roughly between 0.5% and 2.5%. Focus on readability and topic coverage over exact percentages.
